Who Knew You Could Catalog Your Own Library?

Week 8: Social OPAC's

This was another big surprise to me. I had no idea you could catalog your home library on the Internet. I have just recently ordered from Amazon.com and found it to be very user friendly and loved the social aspects of the site like the images, reviews, wish lists and recommendations. I can see how these could make searching our own OPAC more user friendly especially with the use of tags.

Social Bookmarking - This is Great!

Week 7: Social Bookmarking

Just when you thought things couldn't get any better...they do!! Social Bookmarking!! This is so amazing, what a wonderful tool. I love that now I can have my bookmarks no matter where I am and once I finish adding all my work bookmarks to my account I will no longer have to worry about IT changing something on my computer and having no favorites left. I know we've all been there in Scottsdale! I hate to think of how many times that's happened to me alone. But, no more! As I started adding bookmarks to my account and then looking at what others that bookmarked my sites have bookmarked I can see the potential of using this tool for research assistance. Again, I hope I can find the time, sooner than later, to get all my bookmarks at home and work into del.icio.us.

Google Docs - I'm Really Liking This

Week 6: Online Collaboration Tools

I was on vacation most of last week, so now am playing catch up. I took some time off to spend with my boys before they started school. Scott is now a big Kindergartener and Sean started in a Pre-Kindergarten class at the elementary school. Wow, what big boys they've become!

Now, with that first exciting week over, time to concentrate on work. I had recently read somewhere that tools like this may replace Microsoft Word and Excel (it may have been in our first weeks reading). When I read that I thought to myself, "what are they talking about that could possibly make me feel that I have no need for Word and Excel, and what could possibly replace them?"

Well, now I know! These tools are wonderful! No need to buy a program, carry around a disk , or worry about what version and is it on this computer. And what an easy way to share your document and to have others collaborate with you. This is definitely something I will start using. This reminds me of when email went web-based. It's all at your fingertips, just another great tool that you can access from anywhere!

I'm OK With This Part

Week 5: Wikis

This part was no problem. I'm good at following directions and can leave my name on any wiki now, if I want. Maybe, I just need someone to point out good library uses and then I'll get it. I'll keep checking everyone's blog to hopefully, see things a bit clearer.

What Don't I Get

Week 5: Wikis

Ok, I seem to have a basic understanding of what a wiki is and how it can be used, at least in simple terms. I thought I was doing alright, but I don't seem to see the big picure. Looking at the provided websites, I am able to clumsily navigate around them, but am not sure why I even want to. As of yet, I am not sure what wikis would be used for in our libraries and exactly why we would want to use them. I'm not sure what information we would want others to have access to change. I'll keep working on this one to see if I can find the light.
